For the 11th consecutive year, McDonald’s™ has announced McHappy Day, its national charity event to mark World Children’s Day. The event seeks to raise funds in aid of L-Istrina, the Boxing Day fundraising marathon held under the patronage of the President of Malta and the Malta Community Chest Fund.
Details of this year’s McHappy Day were revealed this morning during a press conference held at McDonald's Gharghur in the presence of the President, H.E. Marie Louise Coleiro Preca.
“A business truly reaches its full economic potential when it takes into account its social responsibility. This is because the economy should be of service to the community and not the other way round,” the President said.
Throughout November, customers will be encouraged to ‘Share a Smile’ on the official McDonald’s™ Facebook page by uploading photos featuring the customised cut-out smiles available from all McDonald’s™ restaurants.
“McDonald’s™ will donate €1 for every McHappy smile shared on Facebook,” announced Kurt Camilleri, Senior Operations Manager at McDonald’s™ Malta. “We fully support L-Istrina, and the sterling work it carries out for children and their families each year. It’s truly amazing what a difference a dream can make, and with the help of our community, McDonald’s™ Malta looks forward to make a difference and we encourage everyone to join.”
McHappy Day is McDonald’s™ Malta’s largest fundraising event, bringing all its restaurants together for a good cause. Last year’s campaign raised €33,000 for L-istrina as 500 employees, 68 local personalities and 11,269 people uploaded photos supporting the ‘Share a Smile’ campaign on Facebook. Over the past 11 years, McHappy Day has raised over €230,000 for charity. In November, customers will also be able to purchase McHappy Day keychains available in four colours for €1 from all McDonald’s™ restaurants. “All proceeds made through the sale of these keychains will also be donated to L-Istrina,” Mr Camilleri said.
Finally, on November 29, McDonald’s™ Malta will join the global McDonald’s™ McHappy Day celebrations to raise further funds and awareness for children’s causes. Special events will be held in McDonald’s™ restaurants throughout the day.
“We look forward to sharing the fun on this special day with our customers,” added Mr Camilleri. “There will be piggy banks in all of our restaurants encouraging customers to contribute further to this important cause.”

McDonald’s Malta celebrates its 11th McHappy Day by encouraging customers to share a smile on Facebook for charity throughout November.
McHappy Day, McDonald’s Malta’s annual fund-raiser, has collected over €200,000 for charity since 2002.
For a fifth year, McHappy Day proceeds will go to L-Istrina, the Boxing Day charity fund-raising marathon held under the patronage of the President of Malta.
“McDonald’s has a long standing tradition of giving back to the community. It is one of our business principles and a core McDonald’s value,” McDonald’s Malta General Manager Dorian Desira said. “We have found the perfect way to spread happiness with McHappy Day this year. A smile costs nothing. We invite all our customers, employees, all the people we partner to support our initiative by sharing a smile online.”
From November 1, customers will be able to share a smile on Facebook by taking photos featuring custom-made cutout smiles available from Malta and Gozo’s nine McDonald’s restaurants. Photos are uploaded through the “Share a Smile” tab on the official McDonald’s Malta Facebook page at www.facebook.com/McDonaldsMT.
McDonald’s will donate €1 for every picture taken with McHappy Day Smile that is shared on Facebook.
Proceeds from the sale of Share a Smile key chains, which are available for sale for €1 at all McDonald’s restaurants, will also go to L-Istrina.
On November 23, McDonald’s Malta joins the McDonald’s family around the world to celebrate McHappy Day and raise funds and global awareness for children’s causes. Mrs Margaret Abela, Vice-Chairperson Community Chest Fund, will visit McDonald’s Sliema on the day.
There is a programme of family events for each restaurant, featuring TV personalities, singers, actors, DJs and musicians, including Glen Vella, Christabelle Borg, Floren Sultana, Jean Pierre Cassar, Ronald Briffa, Amber Bondin, Laura Vella, Tezara Camilleri, Manuel Xuereb, Rita Pace, and Keith Demicoli. Throughout the day, they will be joining customers to Share a Smile and take photos to be posted on Facebook.
Activities on each restaurant’s programme include entertainment for children like storytelling, face-painting, art and crafts and singing. There will be live performances in restaurants by Fakawi, Freddie Portelli, Chiara, and entertainment by Gianni and DJ Ruby.
Last year, McHappy Day events raised €22,000 for L-Istrina.
More than 1.2 tons of rubbish were collected by McDonald’s Malta staff and their families at the annual Clean Up the World Day last Saturday.
McDonald’s, in collaboration with Nature Trust (Malta), this year earmarked the Xrobb l-Ghagin coast for its main green event on its corporate social responsibility activities calendar. The activity focused on the area extending from Tas-Silg along to the St. Paul’s Military Battery to the nature park. More than 80 volunteers covered an extensive area around the former Deutschwelle station site in Marsaxlokk.
“McDonald’s is committed to being a conscientious member of the community,” McDonald’s Malta General Manager Dorian Desira said. “This annual Clean Up the World Day is one of many initiatives we undertake. Our environment-friendliness extends to our day to day processes. We recycle cooking oil into bio-diesel fuel and part of packaging cardboard and plastic from our nine restaurants are dispatched for recycling.”
Nature Trust (Malta) appreciated McDonald’s support for its efforts in this particular area.
“We have invested lots of time and money over the past few years to preserve the former Deutschewelle station site and turn the surrounding area into a nature park for everyone to enjoy,” Nature Trust (Malta) executive president Vincent Attard said. “The site helps to promote eco-tourism to the south of the island and is useful for environmental awareness campaigns aimed at thousands of students visiting the park each year.”
He urged visitors to try harder to keep the place clean for others to enjoy.
“The Marsaxlokk Local Council would like to thank the staff of McDonald’s who last Saturday expressed their corporate social responsibility by carrying out a cleaning activity at Delimara. A special thanks goes also to Nature Trust (Malta) for coordinating this activity. Delimara is rich in historical heritage and also provides a natural niche in an otherwise industrialized South of the Island. It is the Local Council’s wish to have a national park in the whole peninsula of Delimara where people can enjoy natural and heritage trails. Thus, we encourage the respective environment and heritage authorities to take note of such cleanup activities as being an expression by the people involved to take more care of the natural and historical heritage of this area”, Marsaxlokk Mayor Perit Edric Micallef said.
